Norbert Leo Butz' road to stardom began in the home of the Butz family, a heavily Catholic immigrant family living in St. Louis, Missouri. Norbert discovered theater at an early age, his brothers and sisters themselves being cast in a production of King and I. He, however, did not make the cut. After finishing his rather turbulent high school years at Bishop Dubourg High School, Norbert secretly entered the Theater program at Webster College, much to the dismay of his parents. Norbert obtained his B.A. in Theatre and then studied and performed for several years in the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, from which he obtained his M.F.A. In 1996, he left for New York with his wife Sydney hoping to make it big. It was an initial struggle but Norbert was discovered by the producers of a new musical called Rent. He was cast to be an understudy and made his Broadway debut. In 1998, Norbert took over full time as Roger Davis. His career on Broadway began in earnest.

What has followed is an illustrous career filled with many deep and insightful roles. He has garnered two Tony Award nominations and one win. He has also received critical praise and awards for his tour work, plays, and off-Broadway musicals. With every passing year, his impressive resume continues to grow. Norbert, however, feels that his greatest achievement, has and always will be his two children, Maggie Lou and Clara Mae.
